Apple: App Store tops 40 billion downloads
In a press release issued by the company, Apple has today announced that downloads from the App Store have now topped a staggering 40 million, and that 2012 accounted for just under half of those downloads alone.
In addition, the company has revealed that the App Store now has over 500 million active user accounts, and that a record-breaking December saw over two billion app downloads.
“It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.”
In the press release, Apple also highlighted some of the success stories to come from the App Store. They include Imangi Studios, who saw their Temple Run game downloaded more than 75 million times; Backflip Studios and Supercell who made over $100 million combined from their free apps DragonVale and Clash of Clans; plus a number of other companies who have attracted millions of iOS users.
Launched in 2008, the App Store currently features more than 775,000 apps for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, and is available in 155 countries around the world.
