Apple has today released a standalone podcasts app for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. The app, which some speculated would launch later this year with iOS 6, features a “Top Stations” guide for content discovery, playback syncing between different iOS devices, the ability to stream shows, and a sleep timer.

At an event held earlier today in San Francisco, Google unveiled “the next dimension” of Google maps to members of the press. The search giant announced improved 3D imaging for the mobile version of Google Earth – the iOS app will get the feature in the coming weeks, and offline map viewing for Android devices only.

Apple has started running a couple of new App Store promotions. ‘Editors Choice’, which appears to have taken the place of “Staff Favourites”, sees new and noteworthy apps given some extra exposure, and the company has also launched a ‘Free App of the Week’ promo.

Following Facebook’s purchase of the popular photo-sharing app Instagram for $1bn just a few weeks ago, the social network giant has announced the launch of a new camera app for iOS. Facebook Camera allows you to take photos, add filters, share multiple images at a time, and view a feed featuring your friends’ snaps.

Rovio is a game development studio based in Finland that is famous for the incredibly popular Angry Birds series. Earlier this week, it announced that its physics-based puzzler had amassed over 1 billion downloads on all platforms, but it isn’t about to rest of its laurels. Rovio is developing a new game called Amazing Alex that’s coming soon.

Since the App Store opened its doors back in 2008, it has spawned a new generation of mobile gaming that is unparalleled on any other device. The store is now home to nearly 800,000 titles, one of the most successful of which is undoubtedly Angry Birds, which just surpassed 1 billion downloads.

If you visit technology blogs – particularly those dedicated to Apple – on a regular basis, you’ve probably already heard about the innovative text editing concept designed for the iPad by Daniel Chase Hooper, which has been circulating since late last week. It has been so popular that it has already been turned into a jailbreak tweak, and now it’s coming to the App Store.

While plenty of iOS apps cease to be updated or supported by companies after a period of time, I’ve never heard of one being expired before. That’s what EA are apparently doing with the original Rock Band for iPhone – owners of the game have been told that after the 31st of May it will no longer be playable on their device.
