In a press release issued by the company, Apple today announced that pre-orders for the iPhone 5 topped an impressive two million during its initial twenty-four hours of availability – more than double the previous record set by the iPhone 4S.

Apple started accepting pre-orders for the iPhone 5 today, but it didn’t take long for the initial supply to be exhausted. After just an hour, estimated shipping times for most models slipped to two weeks in the UK, US, Australia, Canada, and Germany.

While it may not boast NFC or a quad-core processor like its Android-powered rivals, it’s by far the most impressive iPhone yet, with a new A6 chip, a larger 4-inch display, 4G LTE connectivity, and more. Another improvement Apple made with the iPhone 5 was to the camera, and it takes some incredible photographs.

At the time, it sparked speculation that the iPhone 5 might be Apple’s first iOS device to boast NFC connectivity. But as it turns out, that mysterious part covers nothing more than the iPhone’s earpiece speaker.
