Educational institutions looking to buy Apple notebooks for their staff and students are now being offered a lower-specification 13-inch MacBook Air, instead of the white plastic MacBook – which hasn’t been available to consumer customers since July 2011.

Apple have today released Mac OS X 10.7.3 – the third public update to Lion since its arrival back in July 2011. The update, which includes Safari 5.1.3, support for several new languages and a number of bug fixes, is available via Software Update or as a manual install from Apple’s website.

Following the unveiling of iBooks 2 at today’s education-themed media event in New York, Apple announced iBooks Author – a free authoring tool that allows anybody with a Mac to create interactive textbooks which can be shared with iPad owners, or submitted to the iBookstore.

Despite Apple first introducing Thunderbolt with the MacBook Pro back in February 2011, compatible accessories have been slow to come to market. Hopefully, that’s all set to change though, with a number of big names showcasing Thunderbolt products at this week’s CES in Las Vegas.

Apple have today issued a press release announcing that downloads on the Mac App Store have topped 100 million since its launch on the 6th of January this year. They also revealed that the store now features over 500,000 apps.

While I’ve seen obsolete Macs put to novel uses before, It’s been a while since I’ve seen one as clever or quirky as this eMac based cat bed. Created by Samuel Cox, ‘eSleeper’ lights up and plays the Macintosh chime when his cat enters, and tweets how long the cat spent inside, after it leaves.
