Speculation regarding the next-generation MacBook Air understandably went quiet in the run up to WWDC. But now the event has come to an end and things are beginning to calm down again, fresh rumours are starting to surface.

At the event which unveiled the MacBook Air last October, Apple CEO Steve Jobs declared touchscreen notebooks to be “ergonomically terrible,” revealing that the company has done “tons of user testing” on touchscreen computers and concluded that “it doesn’t work.”

While iCloud and iOS 5 were the main talking points at this year’s WWDC, there were some juicy new details regarding Apple’s upcoming Mac OS X Lion operating system, too. Most importantly was the announcement of its release date.

Along with pushing out basic iCloud functionality to iOS 4.3 compatible devices yesterday, Apple also released iTunes 10.3 beta. Available for download from their website (or via software update) it allows users to view a history of past purchases, adds iBooks support to the iTunes store and includes settings to configure automatic downloads for purchases made on other devices.

Amongst the many announcements at the WWDC keynote today, it was confirmed that Mac OS X Lion will be released in July as a 4GB download from the Mac App Store, and it will cost just £20.99 ($29.99).

In an effort to compete with Apple’s Mac App Store, Amazon has just launched its own download store for Mac OS X that boasts a plethora of applications and games from some of the biggest developers, including Aspyr, Feral Interactive and Electronic Arts. Though it may be good for Apple to have some competition when it comes to digital software delivery, I don’t think there’s much hope for Amazon’s latest venture.

And although Apple spoke out about the threat and its intentions to eliminate it with an upcoming software update yesterday, Mac Defender just got a new name and became more intelligent – making it an even bigger threat.
