Apple has today launched its annual “Best Of” promotion highlighting the company’s top picks of 2012 from the iTunes Store, iOS App Store, Mac App Store, and iBookstore. This year’s winners in the UK include the iPhone app Airbnb, the iPad game Paper by FiftyThree, and the film Avengers Assemble.

The older Apple’s iPhone gets, the stronger the competition against it becomes. We’ve seen some terrific smartphones this year — the Samsung Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II, the HTC One X, and the Nokia Lumia 920 to name a few — all of which have attempted to knock Apple’s popular smartphone off its perch. But it’s the iPhone 5 that’s been named TIME Magazine’s gadget of the year.

Respected Apple news podcaster Mac OS Ken has shared an interesting discovery made by one his contributors – promotions for apps on the Apple TV. They can be found by navigating to Movies > Genres > Classics > Holiday Music, Movies, and More on the device, though they only seem to be present in the US iTunes Store – I was only able to find them after switching from the UK iTunes Store.

Apple has updated its annual 12 Days of Christmas app for customers here in the UK, other European countries, and Canada. The app, which is available for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, allows users to download free songs, music videos, apps, books and TV episodes each day between the 26th of December and the 6th of January.
