Until my new MacBook Pro arrives on my doorstep, I’m currently using an 11-inch MacBook Air (hooked up to a Cinema Display) as my everyday machine. Although its Core i5 processor isn’t the best available, because of its solid-state storage, this machine is super fast. Not as speedy as Apple’s latest MacBook Air’s, however, which feature SSD drives 217% faster than their predecessors!

Apple has released a new TV advert for the third-generation iPad which highlights both the versatility of the device, and the stunning quality of its Retina display. Titled ‘Do It All’, the commercial shows an iPad being used to send email, read a book, edit a video, watch a show, create a painting, study biology, and more.

At an event held yesterday in Hollywood, Microsoft unveiled ‘Surface’, a tablet PC designed to compete with Apple’s genre-defining iPad. Described as the “ultimate stage for Windows”, the Redmond-based company will be releasing two models of the device – one with an ARM processor running Windows RT, and one with an Intel processor running Windows 8 Pro.

A rare working Apple 1 computer and a report written by Steve Jobs went under the hammer at Sotheby’s New York yesterday. The vintage computer, one of only six known functioning examples, sold for $374,500 (£240,929) – more than double the price estimated by the auction house.

During its WWDC keynote earlier this week, Apple refreshed its entire notebook lineup. Both the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro got new processors, more RAM, and more storage options, and an entirely new MacBook Pro with a slimmer form factor and a Retina display was introduced.

Apple has released Java updates for OS X Lion and OS X Snow Leopard which offer enhanced security and reliability by updating Java SE 6 to version 1.6.0_33. The updates, which you can download via Software Update, also set the Java plug-in to disable if no applets have been run for an extended length of time.

Having unveiled the new MacBook pro with Retina display at Monday’s WWDC Keynote, Apple has now started airing a TV advert for it. Titled “Every Dimension”, the commercial features Aperture, Mail, and Final Cut Pro X – three of the apps that have been optimized for the notebook’s high-resolution screen.

During the WWDC keynote yesterday, Apple showed off some of the major changes coming to the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch in iOS 6. They include a new Maps app; improvements to Mail, Phone, and Notification Center, and more. But there are lots of awesome features Apple didn’t mention. Here are some of them:

Apple’s 2012 ‘Back to School’ promotion started yesterday, giving students and academic staff the opportunity to claim either a free £70 ($100) gift card with the purchase a new Mac, or a £35 ($50) gift card with the purchase of a new iPad.
