Apple has released a couple of firmware updates which offer improved sleep performance and greater Thunderbolt and 5GHz Wi-Fi network compatibility for the late 2012 iMac and 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, plus a fix for a HDMI display issue on the MacBook. A third update, for all late 2012 Mac models, also offers greater compatibility when using 5GHz Wi-Fi.

Google finally released a standalone version of its Maps app for the iPhone and iPod touch last week, and according to the company’s senior vice president of commerce & local Jeff Huber, the app was downloaded a staggering 10 million times in the first 48 hours of its availability on the App Store.

Google has today launched YouTube Capture – a brand new app for the iPhone and iPod touch which aims to make capturing and sharing video quicker and easier. The app can be used to trim, correct colour, stabilize, and caption videos, which can be shared on YouTube, Google+, Facebook and Twitter.

Yahoo has today released a completely revamped version of its Flickr app for the iPhone and iPod touch, which it says is easier to use and more beautiful than its predecessor. The app also boasts a number of new features, with the most notable being the ability to add 16 Instagram-style filters to your photographs.
