Apple has lost an appeal against a UK court decision that ruled Samsung’s Galaxy tab devices didn’t infringe on the iPad. The loss means Apple will have to publicly acknowledge that the South Korean company didn’t copy its designs by posting notices on its website and in several newspapers & magazines.

Apple has released a Java update for Macs running OS X 10.7 and above, which promises improved security and reliability by updating the provided version of Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_37. The release also removes the Java preferences utility.

Apple just sent out invites for an October 23 press event at San Jose’s California Theatre, but you don’t need to wait until then to find out what the Cupertino company has up its sleeve. A leaked inventory list may have revealed all 24 models of the new iPad mini – and possibly an updated third-generation iPad – ahead of their unveiling. You can also expect to see new iMacs soon, too.

In addition to unveiling a 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Retina display alongside the iPad mini at this month’s much-rumoured media event, 9to5Mac now also claims that Apple is planning to announce updates to its Mac mini lineup.

Apple is widely expected to unveil the iPad mini at a media event planned for later this month, but according to 9to5Mac the smaller tablet won’t be the only new hardware announced. Citing “a consistently reliable source” from a major US retailer, the site claims that Apple will also use the event to announce the much-rumoured 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display.

Yesterday we published a review roundup for the fifth-generation iPod touch, and today the spotlight is on the seventh-generation iPod nano. Compared to the previous generation nano, the new model sports a completely different form factor, with a taller 2.5-inch screen, and more physical buttons.

According to a report published earlier today by AllThingsD, Apple is likely to unveil its much-anticipated iPad mini on Tuesday, the 23rd of October at an invitation-only event. The location of the event hasn’t been specified, but the report suggests it could take place at Apple’s Town Hall Auditorium.
