Apple has announced that it will be holding an earnings call to discuss the financial results of its third fiscal quarter on Tuesday, the 24th of July at 2.00pm Pacific Time (10.00pm in the UK). As usual, the company will be providing a live audio stream of the call on their website.

Just as Apple announced last year, MobileMe has now officially closed. However, any remaining customers who have not yet switched over to iCloud, or downloaded any remaining content stored with the service, still have a final opportunity to do so.

According to an Associated Press report, Apple has agreed to pay Chinese electronics firm Proview $60 (£38m) to settle a longstanding dispute over rights to the “iPad” trademark. The settlement clears the way for Apple to sell their hugely successful tablet device in China – the company’s second-biggest market after the United States.

As much as I like Apple’s Smart Cover, I’ve always been concerned that the edges and rear of my iPad would end up getting scratched. So when Apple quietly introduced the Smart Case for the second and third-generation iPad, I didn’t need much convincing to order one. Priced at £39 ($49), the Smart Case promises the same features as the £35 ($39) Smart Cover, but with full body protection. Unfortunately, it fails to deliver in a number of areas.

In a press release issued by the company, Apple has announced that Bob Mansfield, the company’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, is set to retire. Apple has lined up Dan Riccio, vice president of iPad Hardware Engineering, to take over from Mansfield after a transitional period of several months.

During the second day of its I/O 2012 conference, Google announced it would be releasing a version of its Chrome browser for the iPhone and iPad, and just a few hours on from the announcement, the app is now available to download. Chrome for iOS includes tab syncing across devices, unlimited tabs, and an incognito browsing mode.

Back in 2008, a company called Axiotron launched the Modbook – an OS X tablet computer based on the MacBook. While it could be argued that Apple killed the market for such a device with the launch of the iPad, that hasn’t stopped one of Axiotron’s founders developing a new MacBook Pro based tablet – the Modbook Pro.

During its Google I/O 2012 conference in San Francisco earlier today, Google announced a brand new tablet called the Nexus 7. Starting at just £159 ($199), this 7-inch slate offers a quad-core processor, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and a 9-hour battery life. And as you might expect, it’s coming to do battle with the Amazon Kindle Fire rather than the iPad.

Apple has today released a standalone podcasts app for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. The app, which some speculated would launch later this year with iOS 6, features a “Top Stations” guide for content discovery, playback syncing between different iOS devices, the ability to stream shows, and a sleep timer.
